Competency-Based Career Pathing for Modern Organizations
Competency-Based Career Pathing
High-performing people are critical for high-performing organizations. In today’s rapidly changing business environments, organizations are recognizing the value of a workforce that is not only highly skilled and technically adept, but more importantly, a workforce that can learn quickly, adapt to change, communicate effectively, and foster interpersonal relationships. However, a major concern for organizations is attracting and retaining high caliber talent with these behavioral capabilities (competencies) as they are critical to organizational productivity, performance, and continual improvement.
The principal cause of employee turnover is the lack of attention to career opportunities. An internal career development program can address this issue directly by enhancing performance, building commitment, attracting qualified talent, and ultimately decreasing turnover. Career development programs need to include customized career paths since there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer to an individual’s career journey. Both the employee and the organization have important roles in this process.
Research has shown that organizations that select, develop, evaluate, promote and reward for competencies begin to build a high-performance culture. Despite the potential benefits, the practice of competencies and its application, especially as a criterion for career development, has often lagged behind the theory. As a result, competency-based career pathing has suffered from a large degree of conceptual confusion and a lack of methodological rigor. Competency-based career pathing systems link competencies with the learning activities, which help employees learn what they need for further development. They can review the needed competencies of all the positions and through comparison with the competencies they already possess, identify potential positions and develop their career plans.
